chorlton runner peter competes for team GB in the world orienteering championships
Chorlton Runner Peter Bray will represent Great Britain in The World Orienteering Championships 2023 in Flims Laax in the Swiss Alps on Thursday 13 July.
Peter (a regular at Tuesday sessions, Black Sheep events, fell and road racing), is one of just two British men selected to run the long distance event on 13 July!!
This is a 'Forest' World championships which is the classic version of orienteering. International orienteering has recently gone to a format of alternating each year between a 'Forest' World Champs (long races in the forest) with an 'Urban' World Champs (short races round towns and parks).
This year, there are 3 competitions; the long distance, middle distance (with a qualifier) and a relay (team of 3). Orienteering races are planned for a certain winning time as terrain across the world varies considerably. The long has a planned winning time of 90 minutes and 35 minutes for the middle/ relay. All races are run individually.
Peter’s race is approximately 14.4 km and 730m climb through the alpine meadows and forest above Laax (that's measured in a straight line so he will end up running quite a bit further than that we imagine). It’s planned for a 90 minute winning time!!!
Good luck Peter from everyone at Chorlton Runners.
As you can probably imagine there’s a lot of costs associated with representing your country at such a prestigious event and so the club has set up a Go Fund Me page (with Peter’s permission) to for any members who might be able to and wish to help him with a small contribution. (We appreciate times are hard and so only if you are able to do so.) This will help to cover flights and accommodation. The club has also made a small donation.
